Aerospace Engineering at Illinois alumnus P. Barry Butler has been named the new president of Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University in Daytona Beach, Florida. His most recent position was executive vice president and provost at the University of Iowa.

“I’m thrilled to be named Embry-Riddle's next president and look forward to building upon the outstanding global reputation of the university,” said Butler. “The energy and passion of the faculty, students, staff and Board members I've met throughout the interview process made it clear I'm joining a very special institution.”

Butler earned his bachelor's in AE in 1979 as well as a master's and PhD in Mechanical Sciences and Engineering at Illinois in 1981 and 1984, respectively. He will take the leadership role at Embry, a private institution focused on aviation, aerospace and research, on March 13. Having been cited for his outstanding leadership in the development of future engineers, the College of Engineering at Illinois recognized Butler with the 2012 Alumni Award for Distinguished Service.

Butler began his academic career in the Department of Mechanical Engineering at the University of Iowa, where he spent much of his career. In 1997, he was named an Associate Dean and, later, Dean of Academic Programs for the College of Engineering at Iowa. He served as the university’s Executive Vice President and Provost beginning in 2011. He also served as the campus coordinator of the Iowa Space Grant Consortium.
