Michael B. Bragg, AE professor and College of Engineering Associate Dean for Research and Administrative Affairs, recently was quoted regarding whether it is safe to fly some planes on autopilot in conditions of light to moderate icing.

Bragg was consulted as an expert in The Buffalo Newsweb story that showed that the Federal Aviation Administration and the National Transportation Safety Board differ on the issue. (For the full story, go to

The story followed news of the Feb. 12 crash that killed 50 people on board Continental Connection Flight 3407. Icing was reported in the minutes before the accident.

Bragg also was quoted in The Buffalo News follow-up story examining whether icing, rather than human error, should be blamed for the crash. (For the full story, go towww.buffalonews.com/home/story/584778.html.)

Bragg’s primary expertise is in the field of aircraft icing and his research in this field has been supported by NASA Glenn Research Center, the FAA, and other federal agencies and companies since 1980. Bragg is a consultant for several US companies on matters concerning aircraft icing and serves on the FAA REDAC (Research, Engineering and Development Advisory Committee), the Board of Visitors to the Air Force Institute of Technology, and other advisory committees.
