Educational Outreach 2010-2011

The Ed Out committee worked with the local Boy Scout troop in Champaign to qualify 25 of its members on the Space Exploration Badge. In order to qualify, the troops participated in a class that covered the history of space exploration and an in-depth look at space exploration today. Everyone was allowed to examine a shuttle tile after being heated with a blow torch, then and the class broke into teams of two or three to build and launch their own model rockets. We finished up with nitrogen marshmallows to demonstrate the extreme environment of space. In spite of the cold and the snow, the day was a huge success.
